Welcome to the Jericho Shire...
Jericho and Alpha are the towns within the Jericho Shire, which is one of the largest cattle producing shires in Central Western Queensland. The two towns are both colourful and friendly, with a shire population of 1103.
Jericho Shire is for all practical purposes, divided into two sections. The eastern section of the shire is centred at Alpha with the western section of the shire centred at Jericho. The two sections are geographically separated by the Great Dividing Range.
Alpha is the administration centre of the Shire and possesses most facilities found in larger centres, yet Alpha still retains an enticingly peaceful lifestyle. A number of private and public buildings in the town have been decorated with murals depicting local scenes. These murals have been painted by local and ex-local artists and add to the ambiance of the town.
Following the Council Elections held on 15th March 2008, Jericho Shire Council has amalgamated with Barcaldine Shire Council and Aramac Shire Council to form the Barcaldine Regional Council. The new Council includes the towns of Alpha, Aramac, Barcaldine, Jericho and Muttaburra.
